Nel quarto e nuovo full length, “Beneath The Neon Glow” (la nostra recensione), la cantautrice di Bristol Elles Bailey intreccia le sue radici britanniche con l’Americana, il Blues e il Soul, senza mai dimenticare la potenza del Rock. Una musicalità che si esprime attraverso dieci tracce intriganti, un songwriting sincero esaltato dal suo timbro vocale espressivo e dalla qualità della band che la accompagna. L’artista ce lo racconta in questa piacevole intervista.
“Beneath The Neon Glow”, oltre a essere il quarto album della tua carriera, è il primo con un’etichetta. Come è maturata questa svolta rispetto al tuo percorso finora indipendente?
Dunque, desidero affermare che sono ancora un’artista indipendente e che ho dato in licenza “Beneath the Neon Glow” a Cooking Vinyl tramite la mia etichetta Outlaw Music, con cui perciò sono ancora molto coinvolta e mi piace pensare che le mie mani siano ancora sul volante, ma è davvero fantastico avere un team incredibile intorno a me che mi aiuta e fa il lavoro gravoso oltre a offrire la sua esperienza e sento di poter essere di nuovo un’artista, che è quello che volevo!
Due eventi diversi, uno triste come la pandemia e uno gioioso come la recente maternità. Quanto hanno influito i recenti avvenimenti sul tuo modo di scrivere canzoni e come riesci a conciliare l’attività gratificante ma impegnativa della maternità con la tua carriera?
Ho sentito la pressione di scrivere e realizzare questo album dopo aver pubblicato un disco, di cui sono molto orgogliosa, durante la pandemia e mentre crescevo un bambino. Ho anche imparato che è molto più difficile fare un album con un figlio che non quando si è incinta. Credo che diventare genitore abbia cambiato il mio modo di scrivere canzoni e, nonostante in questo album non ci sia una canzone che parla specificamente di diventare genitore, l’intero tema è cucito nella scrittura delle canzoni, perché il mio cuore si è aperto in un modo che non avrei mai pensato, e quell’amore e quella paura sono ora legate a tutto ciò che faccio.
L’album è stato registrato durante una sorta di jam session dal vivo con la band: puoi raccontarci come si è sviluppata l’idea?
Non direi che è stato registrato in una jam session dal vivo, era un contesto molto più regolato rispetto a una jam. Peraltro, ho registrato tutti i miei album dal vivo in studio, quindi questo non è stato diverso per me. Ho fatto la mia carriera andando in giro a suonare musica dal vivo e se posso catturare tutto questo in studio, lo faccio e lo farò.
Nonostante la linea rock che avvolge ogni tuo brano, nell’album si possono notare spunti da una varietà di generi, dal Blues al Soul passando per l’Americana. Come definiresti la tua musica da un punto di vista stilistico?
Beh, innanzitutto sono solo una cantautrice, ma mi ispiro molto al Blues della vecchia scuola, al Soul, al Roots, all’Americana e tutti questi sapori si ritrovano nella mia musica.
“Beneath The Neon Glow” racconta l’importanza di quei legami che rimangono inossidabili ad aspettarci alla fine di ogni viaggio. Possiamo definirlo anche un album d’amore?
Questo è sicuramente il mio album “d’amore”, è come una lettera d’amore a tutti i diversi tipi di amore della mia vita.
Ci sono due brani, “Ballad of a Broken Dream” e “1972”, in cui vari mirabilmente il tuo timbro vocale. Può dirci come sono nati?
“Ballad of a Broken Dream” e “1972” sono, come dici tu, due canzoni molto diverse. “Ballad of a Broken Dream” è una canzone molto personale per me, che pensavo di non registrare mai, ma sono davvero felice di averlo fatto perché molte persone hanno detto che è la loro canzone preferita del disco. “1972” è invece una canzone intrisa di nostalgia per un’epoca passata, ma in realtà è stata scritta per il 2024. È stata ispirata da un desiderio. Saper mettere giù il telefono e vivere il momento, come si faceva nel 1972.
Ci sono nuovi progetti? Cosa ti riserva il futuro a breve termine? Ti vedremo dal vivo in Italia?
Spero davvero di essere in Italia per il 2025. Non ci ho mai suonato, quindi spero davvero che questo accada. Il futuro mi riserva molte altre tournée, soprattutto in Europa, una volta completato il tour autunnale nel Regno Unito. E per quanto riguarda i nuovi progetti…. Dovrete solo aspettare e vedere 🙂

Beneath The Neon Glow” in addition to being your fourth career album is your first with a label. How did this turn from your hitherto independent path mature?
So what I will say is I’m still an independent artist and I licensed Beneath the Neon Glow to Cooking Vinyl via my label Outlaw Music so I’m still very much involved and I still like to think that my hands are on the driving wheel but it’s really great to have an incredible team around me to help and do the heavy lifting and offer their expertise and I definitely feel like I can be an artist again which is what I wanted!
Two different events, one as sad as the pandemic and one as joyful as recent motherhood. How much have the recent events affected your songwriting and how do you reconcile the rewarding but demanding activity of motherhood with your career?
I definitely felt the pressure of writing and making this album on the back of releasing a record that I’m very proud of, during the pandemic whilst also growing a human. I also learned that it’s much harder to make an album with a toddler than it is when you are pregnant. I definitely think becoming a parent has changed my songwriting. Despite the fact that there isn’t a song specifically about becoming a parent on this album, the whole theme is sewn into the songwriting because my heart opened up in a way I never thought it could, and that love and that fear is now threaded into everything that I do
The album was recorded during a sort of live jam session together with the band: can you tell us about how the idea developed?
I wouldn’t say it was recorded in a live jams session, it was much more controlled than a jam. However, I have recorded all of my albums live in the studio, so this was no different for me. I’ve made my career going out playing music live and as much as I can capture that in the studio, then I will.
Despite the rock line that envelops each of your tracks, you can notice cues from a variety of genres in the album, from Blues to Soul via Americana. How would you define your music from a stylistic point of view?
Well, first and foremost, I am just a singer songwriter but I’m heavily inspired by old school Blues, Soul, Roots and Americana and all of those flavours that comes out in my music.
“Beneath The Neon Glow” tells about the importance of those bonds that remain stainless waiting for us at the end of every journey. Can we also call it a love album?
This is most certainly my “love” album, it’s like a love letter to all the different types of love in my life.
There are two tracks “Ballad of a Broken Dream” and “1972” in which you vary your vocal timbre admirably. Can you tell us how they came about?
“Ballad of a Broken Dream” and “1972” are as you say two very different songs. “Ballad of a Broken Dream” is a very personal song to me, one I actually thought I’d never record but I’m really glad I did as so many people have said its their favourite song on the record. “1972” is a song drenched in nostalgia for a bygone era, however it is actually written for 2024. It was inspired by a craving. I have to put my phone down and live in the moment perhaps like they did in 1972.
Any new projects? What does your future hold in the short term? Will we see you live in Italy?
I really hope to be in Italy for 2025. I’ve never actually played a show there, so I really hope that comes to pass. The future holds a lot more touring especially in Europe once I complete my UK autumn tour. And as for new projects…. you will just have to wait and see 🙂
