In giro per l’Italia per alcuni live e clinics, abbiamo avuto occasione di scambiare due veloci parole con Stef Burns, chitarrista statunitense dalla carriera blasonata: noto in Italia per essere al fianco di Vasco Rossi, ha suonato con Sheila E., The Vu, Y&T, Alice Cooper, Huey Lewis and The News, e moltissimi altri. Dal 2012 ha anche una sua band, gli Stef Burns League.
Hai suonato con tanti artisti e toccato vari generi c’è un suono, uno stile nel quale ti senti davvero soddisfatto, nel quale ti senti realizzato e nel quale ti riconosci?
Amo molti stili di musica, è sempre stato così. Il mio modo di suonare, dove mi sento più connesso, è rock con influenze blues e jazz.
Negli anni Ottanta hai formato la band The VU, un vero super gruppo con membri dei Journey, The Tubes e un fantastico cantante quale Kevin Chalfant. L’unico album registrato è uscito poi postumo nel 2000 ed è un fantastico lavoro AOR. Penso che avreste dovuto avere più fortuna… Quali memorie hai di quel progetto?
Sì, è stato un progetto divertente. L’album è di fatto una serie di demo che sono stati finiti molto tempo dopo. Ho dei bei ricordi di Ross, era così divertente …Tutti i ragazzi erano grandiosi, e Prairie resta uno dei miei batteristi preferiti!
Per la maggior parte del pubblico italiano tu sei il chitarrista di Vasco Rossi, una posizione condivisa con Maurizio Solieri. C’è un altro artista italiano con il quale ti piacerebbe collaborare, in studio o dal vivo, e ci sono altri chitarristi italiani che apprezzi oltre a Solieri?
Sono tanti gli artisti italiani che mi piacciono, ma Vasco è entrato a fondo nel mio cuore. Ho sempre pensato che mi divertirei a suonare con Gianna Nannini, lei è proprio rock! Anche Patti Pravo ed Elio delle Storie tese sono miei preferiti. Pure gli Afterhours e i Subsonica non mi dispiacerebbero. E poi ci sono così tanti bravi chitarristi…molti sono amici. Due dei miei preferiti sono Daniele Gottardo e Matteo Mancuso.
Sei anche nientemeno che il chitarrista di Huey Lewis and The News da quasi vent’anni… Come sei entrato in contatto con loro, e ci sono programmi di tournée sull’onda dell’uscita del nuovo album “Weather”?
Li conosco dal 1981 perché vengono dall’area della baia di San Francisco. Una band grandiosa. Mi hanno “assunto” quando Chris Hayes ha deciso di ritirarsi per restare a casa con la propria famiglia. Per ora i piani sono di promuovere l’album e c’è un brano, “While We’re Young”, che è stato inserito in un nuovo film intitolato “Animal Crackers”. Gli appuntamenti live dovranno aspettare un po’ poiché Huey ha un problema a un orecchio che gli impedisce di sentire bene e quindi di cantare, è una cosa davvero seria per lui.
Tu hai anche un’interessante carriera solista, quando potremo sentire tue nuove cose?
Grazie! Sto lavorando a un paio di pezzi insieme alla Stef Burns League, e spero di fare un tour molto presto!

You have played with many artists and touched various genres, but is there a sound, a style, in which you feel truly satisfied, in which you feel fully realized and in which you recognize yourself?
I love many styles of music. I always have. My playing, when I feel the most connection is something like rock, with blues and jazz flavors.
During the 1980s you formed The VU, an authentic supergroup with members of Journey, The Tubes and an amazing singer, Kevin Chalfant. Your only album came out posthumously in 2000 and is a fantastic AOR album. I think you deserved much more luck, what memories do you have of that project?
Yeah that was a fun project. The album was actually demos that got finished later. Some memories were about Ross being sooo funny. All the guys are so great. Prairie remains one of my favorite drummers!
For the majority of italian public for years you have been the guitarist of Vasco Rossi, a position that you actually shared with Maurizio Solieri. Is there an italian artist you would like to collaborate with in the studio or live and is there any Italian guitarist you know besides Solieri and whom you appreciate?
I like many Italian artists but Vasco has entered my heart in a big way. I always thought Gianna Nannini would be fun to play with. She rocks! Also Patty Pravo, Elio e le storie tese are another favorite. Afterhours and Subsonica sound like fun too. Guitarists are so many great ones… many are friends too. Two of my favorites are Daniele Gottardo and Matteo Mancuso.
For almost 20 years you have also been the guitarist of Huey Lewis & The News; how did you get in touch with this band and above all there are plans for live activities on the wave of the new album “Weather”?
I’ve known them from the San Francisco Bay Area since 1981. Such a great band. They hired me in 2000 when the great Chris Hayes decided to retire to stay home with his family.
For now the plan is to promote the album and there is a song “While We’re Young” featured in a new movie call “Animal Crackers” Live shows will have to wait since unfortunately Huey has an inner ear condition that makes it too difficult to hear pitch and sing. It’s been a real tough one for him.
You also have a very interesting solo career: when can we expect more Stef Burns’ music?
Thank you! Yes I have a couple new songs to finish with Stef Burns League and a tour hopefully very soon!
