Per la prima volta in Italia i neozelandesi Written By Wolves, una delle più promettenti new rock band degli ultimi anni, per un concerto unico che si terrà giovedì 2 novembre al Legend Club di Milano. I biglietti sono disponibili in prevendita presso i circuiti ufficiali. Rinomati per uno spettacolo live altamente energico, hanno già condiviso il palco con pesi massimi internazionali.
Il nuovo tour Europa e Regno Unito sta per iniziare, e siamo così felici che inizi proprio qui in Italia, dove verrete per la prima volta! Cosa possiamo aspettarci? Qualche anticipazione sulla scaletta, avremo canzoni sia dall’ep che dall’lp?
Non vediamo l’ora di arrivare in Italia! Questo tour è onestamente un sogno diventato realtà ed è la realizzazione di uno degli obiettivi a lungo termine della band. Abbiamo messo insieme una scaletta che abbraccia il catalogo della band e faremo del nostro meglio per assicurarci che tutti coloro che verranno agli spettacoli ascoltino tutte le canzoni che vogliono ascoltare! Promettiamo tanta energia e bei momenti, quindi se vieni preparati a sudare con noi. Potremmo anche inserire una nuova traccia…
“Goddess” è appena uscito, ci piacerebbe sapere tutto! Quando e dove avete iniziato a comporlo, come ha funzionato il processo creativo e qualcosa sull’importanza dei testi per voi.
“Goddess” è stata l’ultima canzone che abbiamo scritto per questa serie di uscite, è nata durante il nostro ultimo giorno in studio con il produttore Gladius James (Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato) ed è stata praticamente terminata nel giro di poche ore. “Goddess” è amore, è lussuria, sesso, desiderio, devozione, adorazione e connessione eterna e senza speranza. È la vertiginosa consapevolezza che questa devozione è infinita, apre gli occhi e acceca allo stesso tempo, brucerà caldo come il sole ma ti lascerà anche freddo fino alle ossa. Con questo io (Mikey) ho attinto anche dal mio amore per Shakespeare e sono riuscito a inserire alcune citazioni dirette da Romeo e Giulietta che abbiamo inserito nel video musicale.
Quando è uscito “Secrets” nel 2019, avete fatto scalpore; considerando che c’è stata una pandemia da allora ad oggi, tuttavia avete continuato a crescere molto velocemente, per diverse ragioni fantastiche che noi fan conosciamo (la musica che è fantastica, ovviamente). Cosa ne pensi, come avete gestito una crescita così rapida, soprattutto musicalmente, in così poco tempo?
Siamo stati incredibilmente fortunati ad aver ricevuto un enorme supporto da tutto il mondo durante la vita di questa band, il lato positivo dello streaming è che il mondo è così connesso in questo momento. Siamo una band di un luogo lontano da tutto, la Nuova Zelanda, ma abbiamo fan in tutto il mondo. Ovviamente la pandemia non ha aiutato, il nostro piano originale era di portare l’album “Secrets” in tournée in Europa nel 2020 – quindi siamo in ritardo di soli 3 anni, ma meglio tardi che mai!
E come vi sentite riguardo al futuro? Avete già qualcosa in mente?
Abbiamo qualche asso nella manica e alcune uscite davvero entusiasmanti in arrivo, se sei un fan di Written by Wolves allora è un momento davvero entusiasmante. Speriamo che questo tour sia solo l’inizio e che torneremo l’anno prossimo pronti a scatenarci sul palco in estate!
Possiamo andare un po’ indietro nel tempo? Vorrei chiederti dell’importanza del vostro coinvolgimento in “The Collab Project” (un’iniziativa sulla salute mentale volta a dare ai fan una piattaforma per parlare della loro salute mentale, ndr.)
Il Collab Project è molto importante per noi, da quando la band ha iniziato abbiamo sempre ricevuto messaggi da persone che ci dicevano quanto la nostra musica significhi per loro e l’effetto che ha avuto sulle loro vite. Durante la pandemia ci siamo chiesti come potevamo fare di più, qualcosa di più che limitarci a scrivere canzoni sulle nostre esperienze, così da lì è nato The Collab Project. Farà sempre parte di Written By Wolves e arriverà in forme diverse nel corso della vita della band, ma il messaggio sarà sempre quello di ricordare ai nostri fan e follower che ciò che stanno attraversando non sono soli.ù
E ancora più a ritroso… quali sono le vostre influenze musicali individuali?
Abbiamo tutti gusti musicali vari e diversi, ma personalmente sono cresciuto con i Beatles, Elvis e Led Zepplin, ho avuto una fase pre-adolescenziale come boy band, ho passato il liceo ascoltando Incubus, Korn, Slipknot e Tupac, ora le mie più grandi influenze sono probabilmente Bring Me The Horizon, Enter Shikari, Mac Miller e… Harry Styles…
Quando ognuno di voi ha iniziato a fare musica e come vi siete messi insieme?
Facciamo tutti parte di una band da anni ma abbiamo sempre desiderato fare qualcosa insieme, ma il tempismo non ha mai funzionato. Tuttavia, quando alla fine i tempisono stati giusti, abbiamo colto al volo l’opportunità di iniziare a scrivere insieme, abbiamo deciso che se volevamo fare qualcosa, doveva essere qualcosa di diverso da quello che avevamo mai fatto prima, quindi abbiamo preso tutti gli elementi di tutti i generi che amavamo, Rock, Hip Hop, Pop, colonne sonore di film elettronici e cinematografici e abbiamo cercato di unirli tutti insieme ed è così che è nato Written By Wolves.
L’ultima domanda è cattiva! Se dovessi portare con te solo tre dischi su un’isola deserta, quale sceglieresti?
Oh cavolo, questa è una domanda difficile! Mi stai uccidendo! Per ora opterei per “Appetite For Destruction” dei Guns ‘n Roses, “Morning View” degli Incubus e “Amo…” di Bring Me The Horizon. Ma se me lo chiedessi domani potrei dire “Abbey Road” dei Beatles, “Circles” di Mac Miller e “Sempiternal” di Bring Me The Horizon … O “Harry’s House” di Harry Styles … Maledizione… Non riuscirò a dormire stanotte per questa domanda ahahah!

The new Europe and UK is about to start, and we are so thrilled it starts right here in Italy, where you’re coming for the first time! What can we expect? Any spoiling on the set list, are we going to have songs from both ep and both lp?
We cannot wait to get to Italy! This tour is honestly a dream come true and is the realization of one of the bands long term goals. We’ve put together a set list that spans the bands catalogue and we are going to do our best to make sure everyone who comes to the shows hears all the songs they wanna hear! We promise a whole lot of energy and good times so if you are coming prepare to get sweaty with us. We might even throw in a new track as well…
“Goddess” has really just come out, we’d love to hear all about it! When and where did you start composing it, how the creative process worked, and something about the importance of the lyrics for you.
“Goddess” was the last song we wrote for this series of releases, it came about on our last day in the studio with producer Gladius James (Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato) and was pretty much finished in the space of a few hours. “Goddess” is love, it’s lust, sex, desire, devotion, adoration and hopeless, eternal connection. It’s the dizzying realization that this devotion is infinite, both eye opening and blinding at the same time, it will burn as hot as the sun but also leave you chilled to the bone. With this one I (Mikey) also pulled from my love of Shakespeare and managed to get in a few direct quotes from Romeo and Juliet which we carried through into the music video.
When “Secrets” came out in 2019, you became a sensation quite quickly; considering there’s been a pandemic between then and now, nevertheless you kept growing very fast, due to several fantastic reasons that we fans know (the amazing music, of course). What’s your feeling about it, how did you manage such a fast growing, especially musically, in such a short time?
We’ve been incredibly lucky to have received massive support from all over the world in this bands life span, the upside of streaming is the world is so connected right now. We are a band from the bottom of the world in New Zealand yet we have fans all over the world. Obviously the pandemic didn’t help, our original plan was to be touring the Secrets album through Europe in 2020 – so we are only 3 years late but better late than never!!
And how do you feel about the future? Anything already in mind?
We’ve got a few tricks up our sleeves and some very exciting releases coming up, if you are a fan of Written by Wolves then it is a very exciting time right now. Hopefully this tour is just the start though and we will be back next year ready to kill it on stage in the summer!
Can we go a little bit backwards in time? I’d like to ask you about the importance of your involvement in “The Collab Project” (a mental health initiative aimed at giving fans a platform to talk about their mental health, ndr.)
The Collab Project is very important to us, since the band started we’ve always received messages from people telling us how much our music means to them and the effect it has had on their lives. During the pandemic we asked ourselves how could we do more, more than just writing songs about our own experiences so from there The Collab Project was born. It will always be a part of Written By Wolves and will come in different forms through the bands life span but the message will always be about reminding our fans and followers that what they are going through they are not alone.
And even more backwards… what are your individual musical influences?
We all have varied and different musical tastes but for me personally I grew up on The Beatles, Elvis and Led Zepplin had a pre-teen boy band phase, spent high school listening to Incubus, Korn, Slipknot and Tupac and now my biggest influences are probably Bring Me The Horizon, Enter Shikari, Mac Miller and… Harry Styles…
When each of you started to make music and how did you get together?
We’ve all been in bands for years but had always wanted to do something together but timing had never worked out. However, when the timing did eventually work we jumped at the chance to start writing together, we decided if we were going to do something it needed to be something different to what we’d ever done before, so we took all the elements of all the genres we loved, rock, hip hop, pop, electronic and cinematic movie scores and tried to smash them all together and that’s how Written By Wolves was born.
Last question is naughty and difficult! if you were to take only three records with you on a desert island, which one would you choose?
Oh man, this is a tough question! You’re killing me here! Right now I’m going to go with Guns ‘n Roses “Appetite For Destruction”, Incubus “Morning View” and Bring Me The Horizon “Amo…” But if you asked me tomorrow I might say The Beatles “Abbey Road”, Mac Miller “Circles” and Bring Me The Horizon “Sempiternal”… Or Harry Styles “Harry’s House”… bloody hell… I’m not going to be able to sleep tonight over this question ahahah!
